Commons 2.0 preview: Status Wall (screencast)

Hey, all -

We're here working away at adding Status Wall capabilities to Commons; but since it's still under active development it's not quite ready for people to try out yet.

But still, we wanted to let people see what we're working on, so here's a screencast.  Enjoy!

very nice

Looking very nice Jay -- demo showed a very intuitive and useful interface and layout.

wow, great

This will be great, Jay. I just invested way too many hours integrating FBSS into Heartbeat. A very frustrating experience, and I am sure what I have is not as nice as what you will end up with. I look forward to your release with appreciation.

Perfect!

This corresponds exactly to the feedback I've been getting from my prospective users. And is that "Like" functionality I see? Will it be possible to "Like" blog and discussion posts and their respective comments?

That's really the right development direction.

Even the screencast show us a tiny aspect of further development of "Commons" for the 2.0 Branch it  say something really awesome:

"Look guys we offer to you to use "Commons" for building Social and Business Community as easy as possible."

I really did never doubt that the targets and goals of the biggest CMS open source Community worldwide will always have some great new surprises ready for users.

 Thanks Guys

 Look really really promising.

Looks great!

It seems that you are using the Facebook Style Status module, we have used it internally in our development environment as well with Commons 1.6. Looking forward to Commons 2.0!

GoalGorilla

Awesome!

It seems like an awesome feature! Is there any notifcation available?

Coming.

Well, yes, we're planning on something for notifications.  This is a complex area for several reasons:

  • We've been thinking about how to make notifications sane in this environment. Different people may have different desires regarding notifications, and figuring out how to make this easy is hard.
  • If you've looked at it, you know that the Notifications module(s) are powerful, but somewhat obtuse for developers to add to or use.  Plus, they may be overkill for what we need. Plus, there's the question of how we deal with all the notifications that users may already have set in their Notifications list in current Commons sites.

If anybody has extensive experience with Notifications in Drupal, we'd love to start another thread of conversation with you.  We've already asked all the gurus in Acquia, and there have been at least as many suggestions on how to do it as people we've asked.  But it never hurts to know more, so if you have some deep Notifications experience, please start a discussion thread here about how you'd propose doing Notifications.  We're somewhat down the design road already, so I won't guarantee we'll be slavish to whatever people propose; but we will listen.

I really like the look of this now and the timing of it's release couldn't be better.  Really thinking it could form part of our new intranet...

Done any work on LDAP with commons yet??

Rachel

admin-commons

LDAP works, but..

.. it's not bundled into Commons.

The functionality is:

  • Users are maintained in LDAP
  • When a user logs into Commons, Drupal (LDAP modules) consult the LDAP server to make sure that account exists. If so, a local (Drupal) user account is created for this user.
    • Roles are also pulled from the LDAP server & set in Commons if properly configured / mapped.
    • Therefore, Drupal "obeys" the roles / permissions from LDAP. Note, though, you will likely need to create some more roles (and associated permissions) in Commons to map to the LDAP server.
  • Commons can keep synced with the LDAP server to make sure adds/changes/deletes from LDAP are reflected in Commons.

This often does take some educated setup. Acquia has performed this for customers; consult your local Drupal consultant for help.

Circle +

Can't wait for 2.0
Any chance of a similar group product such as Circle hack for FB or similar on the new G+
Moreover, make the groups private or public, so only thse invited to a group will see it exist.

Pricing Models?

Hi Jay,

The demo is real good, and looks promising for building a social network.

Any word on pricing models for subscribing to Commons 2 SAAS?

Regarding integration, does it sit well with cms other than drupal?

Thx

IceCreamYou

Commons already supports

Commons already supports various levels of private groups, but it doesn't have user-controlled privacy settings yet. I've started working on that but it won't be ready before Commons 2.0 is released.
