Drupal Commons - Profile Interaction

So, I am new to Drupal Commons and Drupal in general.

In Drupal Commons we can create a user profile, within Commons. My question would be, how does the profile information interact with the general Drupal profile information?

I am coming from an industry membership organization point of view. Where we have business/professional profiles, that are publicly accessible to disseminate information of those organizations and individuals.

But we would also like to integrate a community platform a la Drupal Commons for members to interact. So my questions again is, can the profile information be passed forward and backward between those profiles? Or do they need to be maintained independently from each other?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Profile fields

It appears to me that commons is using the core modules for profiles, so you should not have any problems - only issues is that if you already have pre-defined views, etc. you may need to adapt the field names that are in commons. (I would dare say don't do that the other way around, commons has tons of views, etc. created with linkages to these.)
