Group notifications not working correctly

Hi,

I trying to stop email notificatins from being sent to users that join or leave a group.

Here are some of the things I tried:  turned off "Automatically enable notifications for any groups that I join" on the user profile account page - no effect, turned off notificatins modules - no effect, turned off  "Commons Notifications" feature along with all of the supporting modules - no effect. 

On a test site, I uninstalled all of the commons notifications modules - no effect.

On a new install of Drupal 6 with OG and some of the related messaging and notifications modules - I was able to control emails.

It looks to me like this is a bug in Commons, possibly a features one.

Any ideas how to fix it?
