PHP memory || DC provider ?
I am a newbie to the world of CMS/PHP.... and evaluated Joomla / WP and fortunatly detected DC last but not least. No question : Drupal and DC is the best and purest technical implementation for a CMS. Even if this causes a steeper learning curve I want to follow the DC path. I'm actually setting up a community site for a US software company and had to deliver a prototype this week. This one is made with Joomla because it was the fastest way for setup and the nicest look and feel. Anyway I presented a more or less plain implementation of DC as an alternative as well and we agreed that this will be the better way to go.
In my practical work just now I have a tiny problem which brings up bigger question. The problem is that my provider does not support more then 56MB PHP memory and wants me to spend much more upgrate-money to get more PHP memory. As far as I can see the memory is mostly requested by the Image frameworks since version 1.4. BTW is there any way to reduce the PHP memory?
However, for the time being I'm developing locally using the Acquia Control Panel. I tried to port the local site/db --> remote site/db, using BackupMigrate without any success. Even if this would have been successful it would not solve my problem for the long term.
Everything ends up in the question to find a reliable DC provider with the best price/performance ratio?
I would be glad for any useful hints. Thanks in advance.

I guess you're asking about
I guess you're asking about hosting..... If so..........
I've been using a very good hosting company for a few years. They are more expensive but is worth every single penny. Never have hosting related problems, and no limitations like this. The time saved is well worth the extra money.
So a new host is likely the best place to start. In my experience, price is always related to performace...... There are so many tricks to hosting that the specifications they give you alone are not enough to know if it is good or bad. Good hosting costs money.
Does somebody has experience with the Acquia DevCloud ?
mikeaja, thanks for your answer. May I ask the provider/hoster's name ? I watched a webinar of Acquia about their DevCloud : it's a a brilliant concept. I would like to give it a try but I'm not sure if the trial is a full featured one to check out if it's worth a minimum of $149/month.
I don't know much about what
I don't know much about what Acquia provides in that respect, but I bet it's good (and for sure will be good for Commons). Have you tried contacting them about other packages? (I always do this if the minimum is higher than I need).
The providers I use are generally for resellers only, and also UK. I generally find a thorough Google search, and analysing the product specifications vs price is a good way to find decent hosting providers (for example, if they state 'unlimited' I would not be interested, and I would expect to find info about the hardware). Given that Acquia supply this, not sure I should be advertising other companies.......... (??)
Price-wise, I'd say a decent managed server would be around the $300 a month minimum, a decent managed VPS / VDS around $70 - $250 a month, and decent shared hosting around $20 - $60, depending on space / resources required. So the Acquia deal might be quite good.
Got the right provider...
Found my way with : http://www.manufrog.com/. No PHP restrictions, fast ,easy , good service and very Drupal and DC friendly.
Thanks four your help
