DC feature question | user image gallery or photos ?
Hi from germany,
first of all: Very interesting distribution and concept! Looks very promising and its a really cool learning resource and example setup to play with.
My first question:
I am missing the "visual" features like photo galleries or videos. Are there any plans for such "common" features ? On first sight, everything seems to be text-based and somewhat "dry"... ;)
EDIT:
Another discussion in the Commons documentation group (maybe thats the reason why i missed it ;) )
http://commons.acquia.com/discussion/user-specific-image-galleries-each-...
By the way, the term "feature" in the title is not related to the Drupal feature project. Its more like a feature request. Anyway, a solution which is supported by "drupal feature" comes in handy as well.

Comments
It can be done in two ways.
One way is to create multimedia/visual features for DC to use. I think it would be an excellent idea to create that multimedia/visual group and,
1. See what features users like in external multimedia/visual application - Picasa, etc
2. See what features users like in existing multimedia modules - Galleria, Apture
3. Reach conclusions/consensus and try to incorporate it into a feature(s) same as blog or disussion.
Ultimately, you would have DC features available, both textual as well as visual same as modules.
It would be up to designer to choose what features one requires for his/her project and have DC provide context for them to work in Group/Drupal ecosystem.
You can also incorporate existing modules that provide multimedia/visual features. I was able to incorporate http://drupal.org/project/galleria Galleria module to create both new group content type with OG actions and Tab as well as modifying existing content types that come with DC such as blog and group. Some screenshots, https://picasaweb.google.com/102649247313375566845/DropBox?feat=directlink
Also video filter module - http://drupal.org/project/video_filter could be used to easily embed videos, but users have to be aware of syntax/feature and security could be an issue.
Users reported having success with http://drupal.org/project/apture and it looks promising. (made it work on drupal) This is also DC post on it - http://commons.acquia.com/document/video
Good point.
Thanks for your first thoughts...
Thanks for your first thoughts and links.
Hard to find THE user image gallery module(s) in the extensive drupal module universe ;) Since Commons is OG powered, i am confused and lost for the moment. I have to admit, that my time for drupal is limited, but i try to spend as much time as possible in learning setup and theming. I am looking for an image feature that allows at least one or more usergalleries. The images should be able to show up in featured or random order in a block... The other advanved features like tagging, download etc. is not so important.
For example:
Simbunch gallery (see demo link)
JomSocial build-in gallery (see lower right block, click on image points to usergallery)
As you can see ;) , these are joomla CMS based solutions. There are a lot of other gallery applications like JoomGallery, PhocaGallery etc, which integrates into the two major community extensions. In general, its easier to find and use a pre-made solution for a task...
You know it... in Drupal, and because of its modular concept its a completely different story! In the last year i read and studied a lot... but i am still not sure if i am on the right track. There are so many possibilities and dependent projects. A little help or at least a rough starting point which modules are the best choice would be much appreciated. I guess, the Commons developers know their favourites and the pros and cons.
As i heared of the Commons distribution i was really excited, and my first look went to the feature list... unfortunately there is no image and gallery feature (yet). Are there any plans for it?
EDIT:
Interesting media project (D7 only)

I think you've hit on the key
I think you've hit on the key aspect here - can it be done in Drupal?
I think at this stage it would be difficult to get visual things in Commons which you haven't already worked with in Drupal. I spent ages with Drupal working out how to get gallery displays, etc. Of course, Views and CCK are key modules, and Commons uses both.
I think looking at getting Joomla style galleries re-created in Commons is going to be hard. I'd get a Drupal 6 example first.
I'm a big fan of Galleria
I'm a big fan of Galleria (drupal.org/project/galleria) for node-based image galleries. There are a ton of great configuration options and they look great, easy to use, etc.
Or Views slideshow (drupal.org/project/views_slideshow) if you're looking for an automated image slider, for something like the home page, which will slide the latest 5 nodes which include images, or something like that.
Both are great, and there are tons of modules that offer gallery-like behavior in a number of different ways.
Just to add, I particularly
Just to add, I particularly like Views Slideshow because multiple image rotation can be done with one node, using cck image fields. I find this a great way to organise photos (therefore one node effectively becomes one image category).
Thanks again for your suggestions | questions
thanks to pseudohaiku on gallery assist, mikeaja and mike.stefanello for comments. Funny, my first name is also Mike (but written Maik)
Commons will stay on Drupal 6 for a while, right!? But it does not simplify the decision on the right modules. If i choose a project with a lot of dependencies, it might be difficult to switch to D7 later. Bad timing ;-)
Questions:
Any tipps what is crucial for a DC image gallery? Even if it is not supported by "Feature"... I guess, I have to choose a solution thats works with OGs. I have not enough experience with OG at the moment. Does OG sit on-top of any image solution? Whats the most important technical thing to consider? I read about node-based and not node-based images. What is the biggest pro and con of both techniques?
Take a look here...

I'd be up for some collaborative work to complete this.
Thank you
Many thanks for your efforts and offer. I will try it ASAP. Unfortunately i am involved in totally different stuff and CMS ;-) I will be back...
