The modules in Drupal 6 do

The modules in Drupal 6 do not run on Drupal 7. Several modules shouldn't be updated within DC D6 let alone go to D7. The safe bet is, no. Don't upgrade your DC install to D7.

D6-D7 upgrade discussion from Drupal 7 Webchick Tour

I've just returned from a two-day seminar on Drupal 7 by Angie Byron and Joe Shindelar, which BTW was wonderful, and highly recommended.  The seminar included an extended discussion of the steps involved in upgrading a Drupal 6 site to Drupal 7, and their own experience seeking to upgrade Lullabot's multiple D6 sites to D7.  The overall message was:  Unless your D6 site is quite simple and/or you are a real Drupal expert -- wait.  Don't try to upgrade to D7 now.  (A Drupal Commons site, out of the box, is not a simple D6 site!)  This is straight from the co-maintainer of Drupal 7.

Here's a usefuil hint:  Install the Upgrade Status module (http://drupal.org/project/upgrade_status) and use it to keep informed of the D7 upgrade status of the many modules included in Drupal Commons.  This module also includes Upgrade Assist, which helps you to do the required upgrade steps in the right order.

The seminar also included an in-depth discussion of upgrading both contributed modules and themes from D6 to D7, and in the process they did a great job of introducing the whole subject of how to create modules and themes, for people new to this subject.  I really learned a lot from this event.  If you're in Denver, New York, Washington DC and Atlanta, this tour is still coming your way -- see http://www.lullabot.com/events/workshops/webchick for dates.
