i am going to be starting the development on a community website here in Germany in the next few days, and would really be interested in getting my teeth into something really meaty, like testing out Drupal Commons 7,
Well i would be interested in this idea!!
maybe even ironing out some of the easier creases. So let me know if there's a github access or something to start rummaging through. Pleased to meet you!
Many many greetings - and above all: keep up the gr eat work !!!!Drupal commons rocks.
You have friends all over the globe!!! Many many hundreds and thousands of Drupalers love Drupal-Commons You rock the Drupal world!!
In Drupal7, one of the most significant advances is the possibility to have both public and private files. For my community this is really necessary, since all private (expected) files needed to be deleted since they were found by Google, even on pages that were not open to the public....
This issue holds me back for other communities that need "private" areas....
I think the right question would be more like "When would you migrate...". And the right answer would be something like "Now!" :)
In my company we'll be doing lots of customizations in our Commons. For us it seems pretty unavailing to work heavily in DC with Drupal 6, because we nowadays develop mainly with D7 and we want to avoid to work only for one site just for the short term...
Most important for us, it would be good to know what are Acquia plans about this!
What is missing to keep this from being based on Drupal 7? Acquia would be the organization who you would expect to be able to make this smooth and fast.
Open Source software has many advantages, but also some disadvantages, since it depends on voluntary actions, in the case of Drupal 7 and it's many modules, of many individuals.
Some modules on which Commons depends, exist for Drupal 6, but no stable version is available for Drupal 7. Either Acquia has to "seize" power, thereby breaking the trust of many volunteers, or they have to wait and find diplomatic ways in seducing developers to adapt their modules for Drupal 7.
You can add to this secution power by asking the developers to do the work, possibly bribing them (which is called "paying" in the not-open source world).
My answer is definitely YES. But I am also realistic ;-) The real question is: How long would it take to get a D7/8 version of every involved module. Maybe a 1:1 update is not possible, because of discontinued projects. There is also a chance that other projects replace some existing D6 projects.
Regarding Commons setup and module relations: I just saw and used the tip of the iceberg. But i guess a D7 conversion or migration must be a real "beast". But i am full of hope!

All feedback is welcome..

And yes: Drupal is much loved over here!
Enhancements
I think the theme needs some great enhancements and that some new contributed modules should be used.
I've written some theme enhancements and features that would be good to add on Commons in the Commons group.
"When"

"When"
(repeated submit)
Want it now and glad to help
Just echoing the others. Commons for D7 couldn't happen fast enough for me. I'd be glad to help in any way to help get it up and running faster.
themes
Might just be best to move to the Omega Theme or have it as an alternative in the Distro.
When will it be ready?
What is missing to keep this from being based on Drupal 7? Acquia would be the organization who you would expect to be able to make this smooth and fast.
Feedback needed

This is open source
