8:05pm-   Welcome and Housekeeping- Rachel (5 min)

  • Introduce myself, Robin Mann, welcome people to the call
  • Walk through Agenda for the night’s call
    • Introduce the day of action
    • Walk through the volunteer toolkit
    • Hear from vols who are already planning MP events
    • Questions
  • Housekeeping- please keep your phone on mute *6 to mute, #6 to unmute when you are not speaking. When you want to speak up, please introduce yourself with your name and your chapter, group, and location.
  • Purpose for tonight’s call is provide volunteers with resources to organize their own Moving Planet event and get excited about this opportunity to build our movement as we confront coal and oil.
  • Before we kick off, just to get a sense of how many folks we have on the phone, I’m going to have everyone cheer when I call out what time zone you’re in.  Cheer like you mean it—Eastern/Central/Mountain/Pacific/Hawaii & Alaska?
  • Turn it over to Robin

8:10pm-  Introduce Moving Planet & Set Context- Robin (5 min)

  • Theme is a day to move beyond fossil fuels, partnering with 350.org.
  • Idea is to literally and symbolically move the planet in a new direction
  • Why has the SC partnered on Moving Planet
    • 350.org was eager to partner with us on the Moving Planet day of action because of our large grassroots network, and our ability to help plug people into local campaigns to fight fossil fuels to keep the movement moving after the day of action.
    • SC goals for Moving Planet- Why are we encouraging volunteers to get involved (movement building, advancing local campaign work, engaging new people in campaigns moving forward)
  • Our ask is for volunteers to step up to organize Moving Planet events in their communities.
  • This toolkit is meant to give volunteers the resources necessary to organize an effective Moving Planet event.
  • Turn it over to Rachel

8:15 pm-  Introduce volunteer toolkit- Rachel (10 min)

  • Toolkit includes a step-by-step guide on how to organize an event (and be sure not to forget about any important pieces, like logistics, media, and reporting back on your event), sample event ideas, Moving Planet messaging and links to Clubhouse resources on how to create media materials like press releases, and a FAQ about organizing your own event.
  • I’ll walk through some of the more notable pieces of the toolkit:
  • EVENT REGISTRATION- Register at SC Moving Planet action center and your events will show up on the map.  Registering your event through the SC Moving Planet action center will allow us to track and help advance local and national campaigns, provide additional support to our volunteers.  If you already registered your event, please let me know about it by emailing Rachel.butler@sierraclub.org
  • “ASK” - should be C3 (administrative) in nature. Walk through some examples of asks.  Offer help in developing ask.
  • INVITE DECISION MAKERS AND THE MEDIA to your event in advance, and be sure to follow up
  • EVENT IDEAS- Walk through a couple ideas.  Highlight SC policies with regard to events—bike rides must be led by outings leaders, bike rides must have helmets, check out SC outings policies for more details.
  • KEEPING IT SIMPLE IS FINE—it’s better to do something small than nothing at all.  Acknowledge that there is a lot going on in late September, but that Moving Planet provides opportunities to “piggyback” on existing events
  • MESSAGING- you can use this basic messaging as building blocks for press advisories, media releases, letters to the editor, etc.  This is the basic message frame through which the whole Sierra Club is work on a broad level, knowing that messaging for each event will be much more specific and locally tailored.
  • REPORTING BACK- upload your photos to SC Flickr Sitehttp://www.flickr.com/groups/sierraclub/, tag with “Moving Planet”  Fill out the reporting form listed in the toolkit to let us know how things went.  With these photos and reports, we will be able to tell a national story about the Sierra Club mobilizing to move beyond fossil fuels.
  • GRASSROOTS MEDIA- be ready with letters to the editor and guest columns for before and after the event.

8:25- Introduce volunteers who have been working on MP events- Robin (2 min)

  • We’re going to hear from a few volunteers who have been working to organize Moving Planet events in their communities
    • Steve Crowley in Vermont
    • Connie Schmidt in Illinois
    • Roger Deidrich in Virginia

8:27- Volunteers introduce their events (15 min)

  • Steve (5 min)- Highlight coalition and new partnerships aspect
  • Connie (5 min)- Highlight movement building aspect of event
  • Roger (5 min)- Highlight how event feeds into campaign, highlight the ask
  • Other volunteers on the call talk about what they are planning

8:42- Questions- Rachel to MC (10 min)

8:55- Wrap-up- Robin (5 min)

  • Thank you for joining
  • We’re looking forward to using the Moving Planet day of action to build our movement and advance our work to move beyond coal and oil
  • Any additional questions can be directed to Rachel.butler@sierraclub.org
